I think this was taken just after boot camp when I was in Basic Electricity & Electronics School (BE&E School) at Great Lakes Naval Training Center, just north of Chicago, probably in early April of 1968.
While in that school, I stuck my finger on a capacitor in a BIG radar set and got a monster shock. Probably karmic payback from the radar set for turning its cousin, my short wave radio, into a guitar amp.
The shock knocked me off my stool and onto the floor. It burned the tip of my forefinger to the bone and I was writhing in pain on the floor. The instructor came over, pointed to me and said, "Class, this is an example of what happens when you don't follow instructions." Then looking at me, he said, "You can get up now." As if I were malingering maybe.
I was really glad that I was able to be a positive role model for my shipmates. It was the best thing I did in the Navy.
